Ben Aston:
The DPM podcast is where we go beyond the theory to share tips and tricks that will help you lead better digital projects. Thank you for listening. Ben Aston is the founder of The Digital Project Manager. So, I was wondering if your projects are on budget and if you know if they are on budget. Are they profitable? Are you sure they’re profitable? It would be a great help in planning, prioritizing and executing your projects if you knew exactly where they were.
Listen to this podcast sponsored by Productive to learn how to run a more profitable agency while keeping your projects on budget. Tom Car joins me today. He’s a 30-year-old entrepreneur. The interesting thing about him? He has never held a real job. He is the CEO of Infinum, a software design and development agency. Productive is a tool to run a profitable agency. So, Tom.
Tom Car:
Hello there.
Ben Aston:
Let’s start with the curious fact that you have never had a job. How is it possible that you have lived so many years without ever having a job or worked properly?
Tom Car:
It’s a joke, yes. This is how I explain it. I have never had a job since I was 18 years old and started my own business. I have always worked for myself. I’ve been involved in running businesses my whole life, so I have never worked for anyone. So that’s how I say it. I have never had a job.
Ben Aston:
Yeah. Nice. Is it possible that you started Infinum while you were still at university?
Tom Car:
So I graduated high school. We were just kids coding, but we wanted to do more. We wanted to start our own business. We were also starting university. However, we had good ideas and good opportunities, so we just started the business. For the first five to six years, it was just us. We ran the business part-time while studying computer science.
It was going well for the first six years. As you can see, you’re a child going to university and making money from your business. It’s probably the most easy money I’ve ever earned. It became more difficult as you had the task of hiring employees, growing the business, and all the other tasks. It was just us two at the beginning, Matej being my partner, and me working in his kitchen at Matej’s house. It’s like a garage startup, a kitchen startup in the US. After that, we began growing and hiring people. Infinum currently employs over 200 people.
Ben Aston:
Cool. Cool.
Tom Car:
Yes, exactly the exact same company.
Ben Aston:
That’s cool. So you have 200 people spread across the US and Croatia.
Tom Car:
Yes, most of our clients live in the US. Although Croatia is the home of most of our team, it has become more widely distributed. It’s not just Croatia. It’s all over Europe and the USA. This is how people can work from anywhere with everything digital today. That’s how it works in general.
